what is "warm glass"?
In laymen's terms, "warm glass" is the process of melting compatible
or tested glass in a kiln at temperatures ranging up to 1700+ degrees.
Just for fun, "cold glass" is the traditional glass that most people are
familiar with... leaded or copper foiled windows, etc. That glass is not
heated.
"Hot Glass" is glass that is manipulated over
an open flame - glass blowers are doing "hot glass".
why do warm glass?
Aside from melting wine bottles (which is a great way to learn how to
operate a kiln),
warm glass can be incorporated into traditional cold glass
- like the eye of this fish which was painted & fired for
permanency ...
Warm glass also is used to create art, whether jewelry,
plates, dishes, sinks, 3-D statues - the possibilities are
endless, and exciting, and challenging, and adds another
dimension to the world of glass.
Each piece of art is a learning curve -- how does one glass look when melted
with another? how does it melt and at what temperature? what happens if ...???
and on & on & on. The artist must keep detailed notes on each project,
each firing and each result.
